Announcing Beer School Program for VBW2020

It’s the only school where drinking beer is not just allowed — it’s required!

Following its December announcement of 14 events running March 6-14, 2020, the Victoria Beer Society today announces its Beer School program, including four beer-themed classes and a historic walking tour memorializing Greg Evans, a popular local beer historian who passed away a little over a year ago. The curriculum includes a class for everyone — from the novice to the expert and every type of beer student in between.

Beer School Schedule:

Greg Evans Memorial Beer Walk
Saturday, March 6, 11:00pm & 2:00pm at Swans Brewery, Hotel & Pub (506 Pandora Ave)
Guide: Chris Adams – Discover the Past Tours (Ghostly Walks).

An entertaining and educational walking tour celebrating the legacy of Greg Evans, Victoria’s beer historian, who died in December 2018. The tour will culminate with a stop at Swans for a pint of beer and a chance to check out an exhibit showcasing some of Greg’s collection of beer-related artifacts and photos. Food + Beer = Delicious!
Tuesday, March 10, 5:30pm at Île Sauvage Brewing, 2960 Bridge Street
Teacher: Stephane Turcotte, Advanced Cicerone®️

Learn how to pair beer with food. Stephane Turcotte, brewmaster of Île Sauvage Brewing, will be pairing six beers with different, small components of food.

Walk on the Wild Side
Wednesday, March 11, 5:30pm at Île Sauvage Brewing, 2960 Bridge Street
Teacher: Stephane Turcotte, Advanced Cicerone®️

Wild yeasts are fickle creatures that don’t often work how you want them to, but can produce some amazing flavours. Learn how brewers wrangle these wild creatures to create some spectacular beers. This tasting session features six wild-fermented beers, including some from Île Sauvage and some from other BC breweries.

Beer + Coffee
Thursday, March 12, 6:00pm at Discovery Coffee Roastery, 2550 Rock Bay Ave
Teachers: Brittany Davies and Ryan Malcolm

Hosted by Brittany Davies (Education Manager, Discovery Coffee) and Ryan Malcolm (Executive Director, Victoria Beer Society), this 90-minute class will explore how origin, processing, and brew method affect what ends up in your cup. The class will conclude with two tasting flights – one for coffee, one for beer – and plenty of time for questions.

Party Like It’s 999
Saturday, March 14, 3:00pm at the Argyle Attic, 777 Courtney Street
Teacher: Ryan Malcolm, Victoria Beer Society

Taste through a flight of ancient-style beers and learn what people brewed a millennium ago. Representatives from Howl Brewing and Salt Spring Island Ales will be on hand to present a handful of ancient beer styles and talk about others that are yet to be resurrected.

The 7th annual Victoria Beer Week festival celebrates Victoria’s craft beer culture with more than 40 B.C. breweries featured in a total of 19 events over 9 days. The week opens with Lift Off! on March 6 and closes with Saturday Night Casks on March 14, both at the Victoria Public Market.
