Beers, Beaches & Breweries: Winter in the Okanagan

Winter came early this year in the Okanagan. As I write this, it’s cold and the snow is falling. There is lots of snow up in the mountains and our local ski hills will soon be filled with people strapping on skis, snowboards and snowshoes. As the snow falls, breweries are getting ready to launch their big, rich winter ales, perfect for the cold days ahead.

Homebrew Happenin’s: Keep it Simple, Homebrewers

While contemplating what I wanted to write about for this issue I started thinking about my first brews back when I was a first-time homeowner on a budget. Then I started thinking about other home-brewers I know and what they made for their first several brews. Then it came to me. Way too many people make the same move and I believe they are doing themselves a disservice. (Note-for purposes of this column I will assume that you have moved on from kits and are diving into all-grain).

Session Beers and India Session Ales

According to that font of all knowledge, Wikipedia, a definition of 4.5% ABV or less has been proposed by beer writer Lew Bryson. I would heartily support that notion. In contrast, the Brewers Association has adopted a new session beer category within their Great American Beer Fest competition, with an alcohol content not to exceed 4.1% ABW (5.1% ABV).
