Saturday July 6th marks the start of The One Night Only Concert Series! Why wait all summer for The Phillips Backyard Weekender when you could be having a blast in The Phillips Brewery Backyard? The massive and beloved loading-bay-turned-main-stage kicks off early than ever this year, right in the heart of downtown Victoria BC. Just like Phillips beverages, Jesse Roper is a bonafide local legend that will make you smile from ear to ear. So be there for the start of what is sure to become a legendary series of concerts!

Jesse Roper

Jesse Roper’s innate and impressive musical talent has served him well in recent years. It has given him the flexibility to play with soul icon Booker T. Jones, rock veteran Colin James, and blues belter Beth Hart, Canadian legend Burton Cummings, then turn around and headline nightclubs and festivals to younger audiences, and look perfectly comfortable in each scenario. Adventuresome doesn’t properly describe Roper as an artist, because when the guitar-wielding dynamo sets out to accomplish something, there’s no telling where his mind will wander, or where his energy will go.

The stage is where Roper shines. It has been his home since overcoming crippling stage fright during his early twenties. Fear is a part of Roper’s past that barely seems real today – especially when you see the in-concert image of a six-string soldier, hair matted to his face, tearing up the stage, without a hint of second-guessing.

Red Bird, his celebrated 2015 recording, pushed the definition of blues rock to its outer limits, with Roper warning listeners on the hit, Hurricane’s Eye, “that you might be surprised at the treasure you find.” A Fan favourite, Jesse is releasing Red Bird on vinyl for the first time this coming summer 2019.

Yukon Blonde

After the last show of their final European Tour, in support of their 2015 Album, ‘On Blonde,’ Yukon Blonde were not ready to come home to Canada – so they didn’t. Instead, frontman Jeff Innes relocated to Madrid, Spain; to be joined sporadically by his bandmates over the following months. “Crazy” and “Emotional Blackmail” are the first songs to be released from this period and were written in the gardens of the El Retiro, over beers at Restaraunte Padron, and from a one room apartment on San Bernardino, Malasana.

After coming back to Canada the band retreated to the West Coast, and their studio on Galiano Island, an island of less than 1000 people off the coast of British Columbia’s Lower Mainland, and it was there that the band finished the writing process.

These songs were produced by Yukon Blonde and Steve Bays (Hot Hot Heat) and additionally mixed by Steve Bays at Tugboat Studios in Vancouver. They eventually became the album ‘Critical Hit‘ which was released on June 22, 2018
