Celebrating the Women of Craft Beer, Celebrating the Craft Beer of Women

The Tri-Cities Cask Festival Association is proud to announce the date of the second annual Siris Cask Festival, a Craft Cask event featuring 40+ beers made exclusively by women.

The goal of the festival is to provide a venue to showcase the skill of female brewers in BC and across Canada. This reaches back to a time when the important duty of brewing beer was exclusively the role of women in society. (Siris, the symbol of our festival, was the original goddess of beer in pre-Sumerian mythology.)

The other goal for the Siris festival is to provide an ongoing bursary for KPU Brewing and Brewery Operations program. Last year the Siris Bursary was awarded to Kristy Tattrie to help her finish her studies, and we have already delivered our 2018 disbursement to KPU for another qualifying female student in this year’s class.

Siris is helmed by three Associate Directors: Claire Wilson, Brewmaster of Dogwood Brewing, Ashley Brooks, Quality Control Manager of Four Winds Brewing Co., and Julia Hanlon, Brewmaster of Steamworks Beer. In addition to addressing the festival, all of them will be supplying casks. MC for the event is Nancy More, the first female Brewmaster in North America and instructor at KPU.

From last year’s Associate Director Julia Hanlon: “. . . this small club . . . needs more members, so that in the future nobody will feel compelled to ask the question about what it means to be a “female” brewer. The Siris Cask Festival and bursary is one step towards this and I am very honoured and proud to be part of this event to help more female brewers join this amazing community!”

In keeping with spirit of the festival, the first hour will be a VIP event open only to women, and will feature an interactive Q&A between our Associate Directors and their peers. After that hour, all of the ticketed public will be admitted to enjoy all of their great cask beers.

When, Where, How: June 10th, 2018, at the 12 Kings Pub, Noon to 4 pm. (Women only pre-opening 11am to noon)

Who are the brewers?

There are only three craft breweries in BC that have women designated as head brewers, but there are dozens women working as lead brewers and hundreds working at craft breweries across the province. When we approached Craft breweries to have their female staff produce casks for Siris, the response was immediate and enthusiastic.

Breweries that didn’t have a woman as an active member of their fermentation staff almost all had women working for them with brewing skills—either attending brewing school or as home brewers, or from working with other breweries in the past—who stepped in and brewed, again with enthusiasm and talent.

For breweries without the benefit of female brewers in-house, we were able to connect them with female brewers from inside the industry: cicerones, inside staff, account managers, and others who had the skill and love of brewing. In the end, it all came together.

What do I get with my ticket?

Each ticket includes access to the event, a 10oz Tasting Glass, 10 tokens for 4 oz tasters, Event Program, Entry in to the Door Prize Draws. Additional tokens will be available at the venue for $2 each.

What do I need to get in?

You will need to present your ticket in either paper form or on your digital device. 2 pieces of valid ID—this is a 19+ event.

Will there be food available?

12 Kings has a great kitchen and their menu will be available during the event.

Are you women? Who’s running the show?

No, we’re a non-profit society that organizes the largest and best-attended cask festivals in BC. We’ve done the behind-the-scenes organizing to get the space and the casks together, but it’s not our show—we are just holding the curtain for the important players, the brewers.

So are you speaking for the women of brewing?

Not at all. The Women of Craft Brewing don’t need anybody to speak for them. All they need is a place to speak for themselves. As such the TCCFA has only two mandates: to facilitate a great cask festival, and to use ticket proceeds to endow a bursary for female students at KPU. The rest of the festival is up to the brewers themselves. We’re as excited as anyone to see where they take it. That’s part of the reason why it’s women-only in the first hour: networking, celebrating, sharing and enjoying great beer.

Women only for the first hour? Isn’t that reverse sexism?

Since this is a networking opportunity for the women of brewing, we’ve arranged an extra hour at the beginning of the festival for them to have a Q&A panel, and to share their stories and experiences. Everyone gets in at noon and there will be plenty of delicious cask beer to go around.

Is Siris limited to cisgender women only?

Siris is open to all people who identify as women in the brewing industry.

How much is the bursary? How will it be awarded?

Our pledge to KPU is a minimum of $7500, distributed over 5 years. We’re planning on driving that number higher—as high as we can. The award criteria is handled by the finance department at KPU, but the award will go to a female student entering their second year who demonstrates financial need and meets the minimum GPA.

Last year’s recipient, Kristy Tattrie is continuing her studies while working at Yellow Dog Brewing in Port Moody, and this years disbursement has been delivered to the committee.

Is that a depiction of Siris in your logo? Isn’t Ninkasi the goddess of brewers?

It’s actually a stylized image of Innana, the mother-goddess that originated in Uruk. There are no definitive identifiable images of Siris, or indeed of Ninkasi. Siris actually preceded Ninkasi as the goddess of beer and brewing among the Semite peoples and later got folded into Sumerian mythology as a daemon daughter of Ninkasi. We chose Siris because she was earliest, and because there’s a famous brewery named after Ninkasi that we didn’t want to be confused with. Ancient anthropology is fun, but not simple.

Is the registration/ticket transferable?

Yes. Tickets can be gifted. As long as the ticket can be presented either in paper or digitally everything is fine.

Can I get Tickets at the door?

If the event is not sold out tickets will be available at the door for $45. Follow our social media feeds to get updates on availability.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

This is a 19 + event. No admittance under the age of 19. We will be requiring 2 pieces of valid ID to enter the venue. If you do not have ID you will be turned away and no refund will be provided.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

There will be parking near the 12 Kings Pub and surrounding area, but PLEASE! Don’t drive. There are two buses that run from the Main street skytrain station, the #8 Fraser that stops at Broadway and Kingsway, a 5 minute walk from the pub, and the #19 Metrotown Station that stops right in front of the door.
