An Evening of Beertography

Join What’s Brewing magazine’s chief photographer Brian K. Smith for an evening where the craft of photography and craft beer come together with Beau Photo’s knowledgeable pro-gear staff and photographers.

Brian is a member of Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC) and is a accredited Master of Photographic Arts (MPA). He has been following the development of craft beer in BC and worldwide for many years, and enjoys every opportunity to photograph craft breweries. Each one is unique in design and character. With lots of shiny stainless steel, copper pipes and steam there are endless ways to capture the beautiful interiors.

This Camera+Craft session will be held at Red Truck Beer (295 E 1st Ave, Vancouver) on Wednesday, July 3rd from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. You must register to attend. $25 will get you a pint of beer and nachos, as well as an opportunity to test out some gear! As a bonus, Red Truck will have one of their classic trucks outside to photograph at the beginning of the event.

This Session’s Theme

This is an ongoing series, each time with a different theme. The Session 1 theme was all about speciality lenses to enhance your craft, specifically ultra wide-angle, tilt-shift and macro lenses.

Session 2 is all about Nikon gear. You will have an opportunity to shoot the equipment and machinery inside the brewery itself, as well as the Red Truck outdoor area. Nikon and Beau Photo will be providing a whole roster of gear to try out for the evening. A Nikon rep will also be on hand to answer all your questions!

You will also be able to test these lenses out on your own Nikon gear, so bring your camera bodies and/or lens adapters, batteries, memory cards and maybe a tripod for interior shots if you would like to.

The Backstory

Back in the Winter 2018-19 issue of What’s Brewing magazine, Brian published a call to action called “Beertography: A Winter’s Tale.” In it, he wrote:

Craft brewers have their own unique style and their own take on what’s new and trending in the market. The passion they pour into their craft gets poured into your glass. Being around these creative people is inspiring and everyone enjoys the experience. I find brewers very willing to be photographed and enjoy having their breweries mentioned on social media and in print. They are proud of what they do and of being part of the global craft beer renaissance.

A friend suggested forming a group called Beertographers. We could meet up every two months to take a brewery tour, have a few beers, and take some pictures. The group would focus on one brewery each meeting, enjoying creativity behind the lens and on the table.

This new series at Beau Photo is in the spirit of this call to action. Come join in and learn how rewarding it is to shoot the world of craft beer.
