ABOUT LIFECYCLES FRUIT TREE PROJECT:

Thanks to hundreds of volunteers and some ladders, LifeCycles Fruit Tree Project harvests fruit that would otherwise go to waste from backyard trees across the south island. We share the harvest with homeowners, volunteers, and food banks. With the excess fruit, we make unique local products, like the Backyard Blend Cider and our Quince Paste, which, are sold to help sustain the project.

1 – Lifecycles Backyard Blend Cider

What do we do with all those apples that we can’t give away? We make cider! Each year LifeCycles collaborates with Spinnakers to craft the Backyard Blend Cider. This small-batch cider celebrates the age-old tradition of ‘use what you have.’ This year’s vintage features over 60 varieties of heritage and locally grown apples harvested by Fruit Tree Project volunteers. Bottles are only available at Spinnakers Brewpub and liquor stores. Try it while supplies last!

2 – Barrel Fermented Snakebite (Pressed Juice)

Very sweet, and a little tart, the juice for this Barrel Fermented Snakebite came from the very last tree that LifeCycles harvested in late November. These late season storage apples allowed us to provide locally grown fruit to community recipients of the Food Rescue Project up until early February!

3 – Sour Cherry Irish Stout

Cherries are hard to come by in Victoria. Crows and raccoons eat most fruit long before tree owners ever get a chance to taste it. The fruit used in this beer was no exception. Volunteers had to ward off the crows to get at the morello cherries in this stout.

4 – Golden Plum Kolsch

Being the first variety to ripen in August, the Early Golden Plum announces the beginning of LifeCycles’ fruit harvesting season. The fruit has a delicate fruit flavour, akin to an apricot and a striking red blush layers over the golden skin. Over the past 10 years harvesting fruit, we’ve seen tree owners become volunteers, donors, advocates, and advisors. LifeCycles builds community through harvesting our urban orchard.

5 – Blueberry Lager

For the past 3 years, Arbor Farm has dedicated multiple rows of blueberries to LifeCycles Fruit Tree Project. Last season, our volunteers harvested over 2000 lbs of sweet and succulent blueberries! This fruit was distributed to over 50 agencies through the Food Rescue Project which is run by the Food Share Network. Taste this lager to find the flavours of late summer sun.

6 – Sour Plum Maibock

Most people don’t know that many of ornamental plums and cherries that line Victoria’s street can be quite fruitful. Last year, a few industrious volunteers made a point of bringing in the boulevard abundance. The fruit is certainly sour, but it makes a perfect ingredient for jams, syrups and this naturally soured Maibok beer.
