What’s Brewing Spring 2020 Issue Showcases BC Craft Cider

The latest issue of What’s Brewing magazine—a quarterly publication billed as The Journal of BC’s Craft Beer Movement—is now in market. The Spring 2020 edition has been designated ‘The Cider Issue’. Its 48 pages include a 24-page section devoted to craft cider—almost certainly the most ever said about BC cider in one magazine.

The magazine contains 18 stories and features, including ten devoted to cider. Selected stories include:

  • COVER: Merridale Cider: A Story of Apples and Passion.
Brian K. Smith tours the Merridale orchard and learns that BC’s oldest craft cidery is still blazing a trail in the industry. | Page 14

  • Cultivating BC’s Taste for Craft Cider: An interview with the BC Farm Crafted Cider Association featuring their Cider Way initiative. | Page 27

  • Cider vs. Cider II: The What’s Brewing Tasting Panel sips a sextet of ciders selected by JAK’S Liquor Stores. | Page 22

  • The Death of CAMRA Vancouver? Adam Chatburn shares his thoughts relating to the one-time biggest branch of BC’s pre-eminent beer enthusiasts’ organization.
CAMRA BC’s active branches respond. | Page 9

“What’s Brewing is a craft community magazine, and that community includes BC’s craft cider makers,” commented the publication’s Editor, Dave Smith. “We’re pretty proud of our ability to showcase small, independent craft operators on the glossy cover of our quarterly magazine. Also, we appreciate the opportunity to keep innovating with themes like this issue’s focus on cider.”

Other cider features include interviews with Kristen Needham of Sea Cider and Shawn Pisio of BC Cider Festival, as well as pieces on cider history and cider making. The magazine also contains its regular coverage of craft beer around the province.
